Spiritual Burnout?

What? Spiritual Burnout, what's that?

Spiritual burnout is when your spirit feels worn out. It doesn’t just mean you need a nap; it’s a deeper feeling of being disconnected from your sense of purpose, your loved ones, or even from God. You might be walking through the motions, but your heart’s no longer in it.

Many people are afraid to admit this to themselves and others. They don't want to be seen as lacking faith, lacking spiritual discipline, etc. So, they pull up their big pants and suffer on.

What can happen if this becomes long term?

Shaky faith

Focusing on problems vs blessings

Anxiety/Depression

Insomnia

Physical conditions (caused by long term stress)

Avoiding other Christians (because you feel less than them due to struggling)

What can we do about it? How to get help with it?

Talk with a spiritual mentor, therapist, or trusted friend who won’t judge your questions or fatigue.

Rediscover Joy. Which people or things brought you joy in the past? Think of memories with them. This should bring a much needed smile to your face, and motivate you.

Self Care. Self care is a human need. Treat yourself to your favorite food, book, movie, place, etc. Limit news and social media because of their negativity. Instead read positive news, find a positive news website that tells the world that there is still love and hope.

If you need to step back from heavy duties for a short period of time, then do that, if you're able to. Use this time soaking yourself in God, and allowing Him to refresh your body, mind and heart.
